Call Me Bae Review: Journey of Bella from struggle to smiles

If you think Call Me Bae is all about glitz and glamour then you are wrong. Created by Ishita Moitra for Dharma's along with co-writers Samina Motlekar and Rohit Nair, it has 8 episodes about fashion, feminism and the journey of Gen Z discovering them. Initially, I was a little skeptical about watching it but later I enjoyed this ride of self-discovery. Let me introduce you to the journey of Bella Chowdhary a rich but poor girl.

Bella(Ananya Panday) is introduced as a girl with a golden spoon but her brother seems to be getting all the attention and importance. Her life is guided by her mother Gayathri(Mini Mathur) who does not care about her daughter's life. Under her mother's pressure, she has to marry Agastya(Vihaan Samat) another rich heir. Life seems to be a fairytale for Bae as she gets the life of her own dreams.

Two years later she seems to be lonely in the house with no connection and an unhappy marriage. Not knowing how to live in a rich society her emotions seem to be all over the place. Conversing with all the servants and normalizing talking to your bags she finds solace in her life. In search of emotional attachment, she gets caught with her gym instructor Bhasin(Varun Sood) at a party. Things take a tumultuous turn when she is thrown out of the house by her husband. Stranded on the road she turns to her friends and family but sadly it turns out to be a bummer.

With nowhere to go, she decides to go to Mumbai with her brother. But without her family's support life seems to be a misfortune for her. Amid all this chaos she finds a friend in Saira(Muskkaan Jaferi) who is a part-time employee in the hotel where she had to leave owing to her financial crisis. With her help, she finds her home in Losttel and starts to start anew. Not getting close to even one job with her roommates she finds herself drinking to her sadness. Suddenly on TV, she finds the Satyajit Ray(Vir Das) star anchor of the news show TRP. Her instincts kick in she goes viral for her antics. Owing to her witty skills and a course in social media journalism gets her the job in the same company. With her fashion sense and social media tricks gets an internship under Neel (Gurfateh Pirsada). a journalist whose show is tanking.

With an internship in hand, her journey begins in TRP. She meets her colleague Tammarrah(Niharika Lyra Dutt) who offers her own place to stay. A dream of her own house in Mumbai seems to be an achievement for Bae for little did she know that she has been fooled. Irritated by her fame Satyajit starts to show who is the boss. Well, Bae seems to tackle all of it and then suddenly an anonymous courier gets dropped to her during office hours. Little did she know that this message was going to be a change in her entire career. Suddenly while watching the video received as courier Saira and Bhasin show up. Then the drama unfolds where you see an actress who gives them clues to find help her from the sexual abuse of Mukul Sawla the ultimate tycoon who seems to have put up a façade to hide his sexual escapades.

Initially being jealous of Bae Tam(Taammarah) seems to be uninterested but with behen code(the ultimate sister goals) in question, she does help. So Bae along with Tam and Saira start to uncover the mask of the actress. While all this goes on Bhasin follows a journey of self-discovery where he does understand the true meaning of love. Bae seems to get serious about being a journalist while discovering her love for Neel. On finding her brother at a party hosted by TRP she does get equally happy and surprised. But it all goes in vain when she realizes how little her opinions matter she gets hurt. She tries to remember the spectacle she did to get the attention of her family.

With the revelation of Madhulika Sahani(Sayani Gupta) as the victim of sexual harassment, Bae decides it's time to unmask her. She tries to make Madhulika understand how important it is for her to put a message out in the open. With support from all her friends and even the producer Lisa(Harleen) who initially sides with Satyajit on all his antics and supports them. On his famous show Confession, it is revealed how both Mukul and Satyajit have invaded the privacy of celebrities. She puts out all the facts and the audience understands who the real culprit is. With everything on track finally Bae loves the middle class life. But wait wouldn't it be boring if all goes well in Bae's life- when Neel actually shows some commitment Agastya too shows up with a ring in his hand.

No matter who comes along the way Ananya is the real start of this show. The character seems to be taken from her life. The spoilt Delhi brat who comes a long way from being no one to finally having an identity of her own. Behen code does come far away from being strangers to eventually uniting against everyone else.

Muskkan is that one friend with whom you have a brawl but ultimately you cannot survive without them. She plays a friendly yet irritating friend who seems to have a problem with all her friend's solutions except her own.

Vir Das as Satyajit does justice to the rude, arrogant and pompous journalist who believes that news is actually sensation covered with a mix of facts. Varun does fine as a gym instructor but I believe more can be explored from his side. Gurfateh and Niharika have played their part in making this chapter a great memory. Also, the characters who have little screen presence managed to create an impact.

Everything does work out in the favour of Ananya with her looks and character it seems like she has finally proved herself. The credit for all that chic look hailing from Delhi goes to Anita Shroff. Her styling too creates a realistic image of the rich spoiled brat.

Overall this series does make you cry, giggle and think at the same time. If you are missing your gang then it's time you start reliving it by watching soon. To all my girlies this one's for you!
