Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein Review: A Cult Movie That Proves Love Knows No Boundaries

Releasing old movies is the trend these days. So when I realized that Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein is set to release again I was excited. Every song and scene started to play in my mind. Reliving it again on a big screen made me joyfully dance. So when I got the chance I jumped on it and had my moment come true.

Watching it once again I understood why this movie still seems to be the classic film that defies logic. I know some might disagree with me as it does show some toxic behavior in love. But this movie has that magic and innocence invading our souls. The movie begins by showing the rebellious character of Madhav Shastri (R. Madhavan) a mechanical engineering student. Yes, you guys guessed it right he is the typical hooligan who behaves as if he is the only guy in the college. Like they say he engages in a love-hate relationship with the studious guy Rajiv Sharma (Saif Ali Khan) who hates this attitude. The usual ego clashes between these two and the altercations become the backdrop of this movie. Over getting a chance to settle in San Francisco Madhav rejects it as he loves his Dad who lives in Mumbai.

Deendayal(Anupam Kher) the hard-core romantic is the owner of the music shop. He never leaves a chance to flirt a little. So when his son Madhav comes in need of some money to watch a movie he asks him to watch it with some girl. He basically wants his son to fall in love and understand how it feels when in love. It is one of those rainy days where the lights are out and Madhav is stranded on the streets. He calls his dad from the PCO and there he notices some children having fun in the rain. In the midst of that, a girl gets out of the car and starts to enjoy the weather. A glimpse of her and he loses his mind. "Main Delhi bol raha hu Maddy"- the first thing he says when his dad picks up the call. That exact moment lightning cracks and he catches her face and her carefree nature. The background music and the pure joy of falling in love are depicted in that instant.

Even when not knowing her name he notices her in marriage and wants to be with her. He gets to know about Reena(Dia Mirza) through the groom who is her friend. Like every crazy lover, he shows his friends the glass and the lipstick mark to his friends. Well like every gang out there they start to tease him. To understand if it is love or infatuation he decides to give some time to his feelings. He again meets Reena while waiting at the signal. Well as usual he does not get a chance but later finds her friend Shruthi(Tanaaz Kurim) and decides to get some information along with his friend Vicky(Vrajesh Hirjee). They cook up some lies and try to get her number. They do succeed in that but understanding that her marriage is already fixed he gets disappointed. But like every friend, Vicky encourages him to pursue his love.

Upon knowing that Reena has never met Rajiv the guy she is going to get married. So when his dad tells Maddy that he should meet her as the guy Reena is going to get married. To make sure the plan goes smoothly they ensure that the cable of the landline gets disconnected. It sure seems like a perfect plan. Like every other mad guy in love, he starts sending flowers to Reena and then finally meets her pretending as Rajiv. For love, he even eats chicken being a pure vegetarian. Every moment he spent with her seemed like seconds for him. Bringing her gifts thinking it is her birthday and meeting her on the beach seems like magic. In the middle of that Rajiv calls his mom saying that he is not able to contact her. Maddy tries to confess the truth but alas words seem to have stuck in his throat.

Finally, Reena too starts to feel for Maddy. To confess her feelings they are on the bridge with water on both sides. She pours her heart and yes she proposes to him there on the bridge. The depth of their love is beautifully depicted in the song "Zara Zara". Each line feels like the disclosure of their love blooming to its fullest. All hell breaks loose when Reena actually meets Rajiv with the families around. The truth of who Rajiv is gets disclosed and she feels shocked and angry at once. When discussing with Shruti she understands the truth and gets sad while actually knowing how deeply she has fallen for Maddy. Finally trying to confess the truth, Maddy gets rejected and deeply hurt. All those 5 days seem like 5 lifetimes for both of them. In the process of getting her back, he understands who Rajiv is and suddenly his old habits get hold of him.

Rejected he decides to leave for San Francisco and tries to leave it all in the past. For his son, Deendayal tries to fix the situation but all goes in vain. While taking pheras for marriage Rajiv realizes that Reena only loves Maddy. So instead of marrying her, he takes her to the airport where Maddy is leaving. Yes, love does win in the end but the love-hate relationship with Rajeev continues forever.

While discussing this movie you can never forget Gautham Vasudev Menon(GVM)it is the writer and director of this film and also its producer Vashu Bhagnani. All of GVM's films have always depicted the kind of love you have craved at least once in a lifetime. He is an expert in narrating films that make you feel like the main character of the film. Even though this movie is a remake of Minnale a blockbuster in Tamil it didn't do well when released. But as years passed by the movie started gaining a following which made it an absolute cult movie. When you know it's a GVM movie the songs and background music are something that will be remembered forever. This movie has songs for everyone if you love Mumbai then you have "Ohh Mama Mama", if you want to get enchanted by love then there are songs, and yes the famous heartbreak song "Sach Keh Raha Hai Deewana". The locations in the movie are beautifully captured and it feels like a dream sequence for movie lovers.

One of the main reasons the movie worked is because of the cast and the crew that performed so well. Madhavan is truly one of the finest actors of his time. While seeing his career graph you know that he has played the boy next door in lots of them but this movie is surely loved by people all over the world. Dia is very selective when it comes to picking films of her choice. Well to be honest this one movie will always be remembered. The chemistry between him and Dia is sparkling and you feel the emotions through them. The love-hate relationship with Madhavan is played very well by Saif. You can see the range of emotions and his talent as an actor throughout the film. Anupam Kher, Tanaaz, and Vrajesh are the characters who play their part and bring a fresh take on the movie.

Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein is the movie that makes you want to fall in love again. The endearing performances by the entire team and the music are surely going to win your hearts. So yes, if you are in the mood for a love story that ends happily then this is the one. Grab your popcorn and go to your nearest theatres now.
