Sector 36 Movie Review: A Cruel Reminder Where Vikrant Massey & Deepak Dobriyal Dazzle Image Source: The Hindu
A crime thriller like Sector 36 is a 123-minute film that has managed to capture the evil face of society. Based on the 2006 serial killing Nithari Case in Delhi this film showcases the reality. Except for some creative liberty, this film reels back to the mortifying and thrilling case that is not for the faint-hearted.
The film starts with an unsettling scene where you see Prem(Vikrant Massey) a normal caretaker who lives in Delhi in Sector 36 dismembers the child's body parts. At that exact moment, one can feel a certain amount of creepiness all over the body. On the surface, it seems that Prem is a simple man with his daily routine which includes watching 'Sab Banenge Crorepati'. But his dark side includes kidnapping and murdering children for his pleasure. As the children keep on missing all these cases pile upon the shoulders of Inspector Ram Charan Pandey(Deepak Dobriyal). You wonder what this film is about and that instant the plot unravels. Well, it's good that the movie is on Netflix so you know when to press the button.
Aditya Nimbalkar in his debut directorial captures the harsh realities of our society and the pursuit of justice under such circumstances. From the start, the film introduces you to the mentality of Prem who is not just a murderer but a paedophile and a cannibal. As the story progresses you start hating him but also fear seeing the sights with your own eyes. Vikrant does a fantastic job of portraying Prem. It's not the nature of his crime but the way he relishes in them makes you feel appalled and strange.
The confession scene of Prem in this movie is one of the most intimidating scenes ever. When all the clues and evidence point towards Prem he is taken into custody by Pandey. But Prem seems to be in a hurry as he has to watch his favourite program Crorepati. With no amount of guilt even in his voice, he confesses to all the crimes and that too with pleasure. A flashback to his past where he had undergone a situation similar is highlighted. This revelation leads to a shock and one can see how fazed Deepak is. When he catches his own daughter being abducted during one of his performances in the play, the severity is drawn upon him. It is difficult to imagine him playing a cop who wants to bring justice at last as Vikrant who plays a petrifying character on screen.
The mastermind of this plot Bodhyan Roychaudhury has done excellent work on its execution. In this movie you not only see the extent of the crime but also the consequences of it. When an abduction of a child with a high stature takes place action is taken at once but the children of slums keep on piling as posters on the wall. One can clearly understand how much of a difference a human life has. Rather than knowing the truth everyone starts to give their own perception creating a bigger chaos than ever. He has brilliantly captured how certain things do exist in our society.
If you think you can see the rest of the movie with some peace then you are wrong. Gutters will be cleared and graves will be searched. Body parts are found scattered everywhere. At one point Prem helps in telling exactly where to dig and even lends a hand in securing the evidence. The tension seems to be rising between Prem and Pandey during these scenes. One can clearly see the spark between both of them and the conviction with which they portray these characters.
Sector 36 is a horrific retelling of the famous Noida case. It may have not fully captured the raw essence but has been successful in capturing the intensity and the unfolding evil face of the society we live in. The narrative sure has the power but performances are the key in this movie, especially the characters of DY SP Rastogi(Darshan Jariwala) and Bassi(Akash Khurana). Both of them have done a wonderful job of living up to the characters.
Even with all the bloodshed, this film is still a crime thriller one can watch, But the challenge still exists of watching this two-hour film. And if you can just make sure to avoid watching during the night.
