L2-Empuraan Movie Review: A Bigger, Bolder Sequel That Redefines the Game
When Lucifer hit the screens in 2019, it wasn’t just another political thriller it was a visual experience. It gave us Stephen Nedumpally, a man who was much more than he seemed, revealing himself as the enigmatic Khureshi Ab’raam. But if Lucifer was a mere glimpse into his world, Empuraan is the grand unveiling. This isn’t just a sequel but a bold statement. A declaration that the game has only begun, and the stakes are far beyond what we imagined.
So, when I heard it was releasing I decided to get hold of my excitement and got a ticket to the brilliant masterpiece. The entire film made me swell with some pride that a Malayalam film has become equal to a Hollywood level. So without wasting any more time lets me share my thoughts on this film.
Plot Overview
If you have ever watched Lucifer then you surely know that what the next chapter Empuraan is all about. Without revealing too much (because trust me, this film is best enjoyed with as little knowledge as possible), Empuraan dives deeper into the life and legacy of Khureshi Ab’raam (Mohanlal). If you thought he was just another powerful figure with a mysterious past, think again. This time, we see him operating not just in India but on a global scale, maneuvering through dangerous alliances, betrayals, and the hovering scrutiny of intelligence agencies.
The film doesn't just focus on Ab’raam’s power but also the story of Zayed Masood (Prithviraj) and his bond with Khureshi. It also takes us through the agony and pain of the powerful and mighty Zayed which almost paved his path with Khureshi. The narrative also takes you through the political corridors, underground crime networks, and a world where trust is the most expensive currency. Every move Ab’raam makes feels calculated, every dialogue feels loaded, and every character has a purpose in this grand chess game of power.
Performances That Command The Screen
Mohanlal once again proves why he is one of the finest actors in Indian cinema. As Khureshi Ab’raam, he brings an unmatched aura of authority and mystery, making every scene he’s in feel larger than life. His ability to switch between calm composure and explosive intensity keeps the audience hooked, adding depth to his enigmatic character. His style, aura and the charm he adds gives an extra layer to the mysterious character he plays.
The supporting cast is equally brilliant, each delivering performances that enhance the film’s intrigue. Prithviraj Sukumaran, apart from directing, makes a strong impact with his screen presence. Other key players, including Manju Warrier and Tovino Thomas, add layers to the story, making every interaction meaningful. Also, every character that even had a glimpse in the story plays a huge part in elevating the screenplay to a higher level. With a cast that blends veteran actors and fresh faces, Empuraan ensures that every performance leaves a lasting impression.
Visual Brilliance: A Cinematic Masterpiece
Empuraan is a film that speaks through its visuals just as much as its dialogues. Under the masterful direction of Prithviraj Sukumaran, Empuraan delivers a visual spectacle that is both grand and immersive Every frame is carefully composed, creating an immersive experience that transports the audience into Khureshi Ab’raam’s world. The film seamlessly moves between luxurious political spaces, petrifying hideouts, and breathtaking international locations, each setting enhancing the tone of the narrative. The cinematography captures both grandeur and grit, making every moment feel visually captivating.
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood; warm golden hues reflect power and influence, while cooler, darker tones highlight tension and danger. Action sequences are not just thrilling but beautifully choreographed, making each fight feel fluid and realistic. Wide shots emphasize the scale of the conflicts, while tight close-ups capture the raw intensity of emotions. Whether it’s a high-speed chase through the streets, a quiet exchange loaded with implied hostility, or a larger-than-life confrontation, Prithviraj ensures that every scene in Empuraan leaves a visual impact.
Music and Background Score: The Soul of the Film
Deepak Dev’s background score in Empuraan is an essential force that elevates every scene. It doesn’t just accompany the story instead it drives it, adding layers of depth and emotion to the unfolding drama. The powerful theme of Khureshi Ab’raam commands attention, reinforcing his enigmatic presence even when he is off-screen.
Suspenseful moments are intensified by subtle, rhythmic beats that create a lingering sense of anticipation, while high-energy action sequences are driven by pulsating, adrenaline-fueled compositions. The score knows when to be held, using silence to build tension before rising dramatically to pull the audience back in. With a mix of grand orchestral pieces and modern atmospheric sounds, the score perfectly matches the film’s tone, making every twist, revelation, and confrontation feel more powerful. It’s more than just background music but the soul of Empuraan.
Final Thoughts
Empuraan isn’t just a continuation of Lucifer but a bigger, more intricate story that expands its world with higher stakes and deeper intrigue. Unlike its predecessor, which focused on political drama, this film takes a broader approach, blending action, strategy, and suspense into a gripping narrative. With stunning visuals and high-intensity sequences, it delivers a truly immersive experience.
While comparisons to Lucifer are inevitable, Empuraan is best enjoyed as its own journey. It unfolds with purpose, challenging expectations at every turn. Rather than measuring it against the first film, step into the theater and experience its scale and impact firsthand. And with the next and final chapter on the horizon, I’m excited to see how this journey reaches its ultimate destination.
And if you’re still in the mood for something emotionally stirring after Empuraan, do check out Kaafir recently re-released as a film on ZEE5. It’s a quiet storm of a story
